Artist Mark WilliamsMark Williams

Mark Williams is a Humboldt County native and has been attending The Studio since it’s inception. He is an avid nature lover and this is reflected in much of the art that he makes.

On field trips and picnics, Mark is always pointing out trees and knows most of the names for them. So it is not surprising that he has made numerous sculptures and paintings of trees throughout his career at The Studio.

In his paintings, the weather is of some importance to him, as is reflected in the angles that his trees are standing and the wind speed numbers which are almost always present along the edges. This is a representation of how hard the wind is blowing. In big winds the trees are leaning close to the ground and the numbers are high.

Williams is also a devoted Christian and almost every painting also has a representation of the spirit of Jesus floating among the trees. Mark will also paint other figures in some of his paintings, but these are always watched over by a Jesus figure.

Mark also makes mosaic coasters, trivets and stepping stones, which have become some of the most coveted and popular art pieces made at The Studio. These sometimes also have trees and/or Jesus in them, but here Mark has a much wider range of expression and colors, and this work is mostly abstract and very formalist.
