Artist Bio
Soodie claims his interest in drawing and painting started when he was a young boy and would draw all over the walls in the house he grew up in. He began painting at his high school in Fortuna, California, and continued his art education at the College of the Redwoods, Humboldt’s community college.
Soodie’s main form of expression continues to be drawing. Though oil pastel is his preferred medium, Soodie frequently works with acrylic paint.
Since joining the Studio in 1999, Soodie has begun exploring alternative art forms, including sculpture, drama and video.
Soodie’s other interests include reading, Star Wars and women. Each of these interests appear at times as the subjects of his art.
Soodie is also a part of The Sketch Club, a group of artists who are in The Studio’s figure drawing class. As a member of this group, Whitaker has been drawing portraits at several art and craft fairs in Eureka.
When asked why he draws and paints, Soodie’s reply is quick and to the point: “I just love it, I just love art.” Asked how he feels about a successfully executed picture he had just finished, he replied “I feel proud and honored”.
